U.S. TO BOLSTER MILITARY PRESENCE IN QATAR February 3, 2002

The Middle East Newsline reports: “The U.S. Defense Department has approved funding for the transfer of military units from the U.S. Central Command to Doha. The command, based in Tampa, Fla, has a large presence in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Officials would not say whether the Pentagon effort would replace the U.S. military presence in Saudi Arabia. Riyad and Washington are said to have launched a quiet dialogue on the future of U.S. soldiers in the kingdom.

The United States has prepositioned equipment for an armored brigade as well as deploying patrol aircraft in Qatar. The Pentagon has also been upgrading an air force base in the emirate…”

The sooner we leave Saudi Arabia the better -- the current arrangement seriously limits the strategic options in exchange for tactical convenience. IMHO.
