U.S. TO BOLSTER MILITARY PRESENCE IN QATAR February 3, 2002 The Middle East Newsline reports: “The U.S. Defense Department has approved funding for the transfer of military units from the U.S. Central Command to Doha. The command, based in Tampa, Fla, has a large presence in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Officials would not say whether the Pentagon effort would replace the U.S. military presence in Saudi Arabia. Riyad and Washington are said to have launched a quiet dialogue on the future of U.S. soldiers in the kingdom.
