Robert, don't complain about the fact that Israeli are called to obey a higher standard than the Palestinians, they are called to obey such standards not because of world opinion, but simply because, that is the basic moral standard on which they are raised. Soldiers are taught to disobey illegal orders, and are prosecuted when they fail either wantonly or by accident to avoid harming non combatants. I know that Thomas like to harp about Sabra and Shatilla, but when Sharon was really in command, and had locked the Egyptian third army on the eastern bank of the Suez canal, and could, completely legally, carpet bomb that army to derision, he refrained from killing as many as he could and negotiated with the Egyptian opposing General a way to disarm them and not even taking the army as prisoners of war.

Yes, the Israeli are called to abide by higher standards, and that is the way it should be.

"The truth doesn't matter to most people outside of Israel."

IMO, the truth is the only thing that matters to most people outside the Middle East. But finding out the truth is not easy, when we have media that would rather wallow in emotionalism than do in-depth coverage. That is why I have been here and on the foreign affairs thread, trying to find out what's really going on.

Nice try, but that doesn't account for the cold, hard numbers - Palestinian civilians are killed in much greater numbers than the Israelis. And there is considerable evidence that civilians are targeted routinely. For example the Israeli army defectors who defect for this specific reason. And, one has to deduct from the civilian count the Israeli settlers, making it even more lopsided.
