Ilmarinen,

<< That is why I tought (think) Sonera was so smart, (almost) automatic (free) GPRS activation. >>

Very sensible marketing, once the network is properly tuned and has adequate capacity to support the services.

>> GPRS Feature Available To All Sonera's Mobile Phone Customers

January 31, 2002
Sonera PR

New GPRS-based service added to service offering.

Now all Sonera IN customers can adopt the GPRS feature without a separate connection or monthly charge. The billing will be based on the amount of data transmitted, the data transmission costing 0.01 euros per kilobyte. The feature can be introduced into all Sonera IN subscriptions as of January 31, 2002.

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) facilitates the use of data transmission services. The Internet, for example, and WAP services, are now faster to access. GPRS data transmission is also cost-effective: the customer pays for the data transmitted, not for the connection time. Sonera's services also enable the reception of phone calls during a GPRS connection. In 2000, Sonera became the first to introduce GPRS-based services onto the Nordic market.

Data transmission costs can be checked by a text message enquiry A Sonera customer can adopt the GPRS feature by sending the text message TILAA GPRS to number 15400 (0.17 euros / text message) or by calling Sonera's Customer Care number 0800 17000. To be able to adopt the feature, the customer needs a GPRS phone. Data transmission by the GPRS feature costs €0.01 per kilobyte. The customer can monitor the accumulation of data transmission costs by sending the text message enquiry GSALDO to number 15400 (0.17 euros / message).

"Thanks to the GPRS feature, which belongs to the basic services of the subscription, the customer can now use WAP services easily and cost-effectively. We have lowered the barrier to encourage more and more people to test the services and to notice how versatile and easy to use they really are. Further, the new balance enquiry service makes it easy to monitor what the GPRS use costs," says Product Manager Heikki Martinoja of Sonera.

Open Data's Campaign Pricing In 2002

Sonera offers Open and Pro Data for active users and Company Data for Corporate Agreement customers without a connection charge until February 28, 2002. In future, even these services will be billed for at an accuracy of one kilobyte. Further, cost-effective campaign pricing will be applied to Open Data until the end of 2002. During this time, no data transmission charge will be collected for the use of Sonera's WAP services. The benefit applies to both current and new Open Data users.
