Mobile sales across Europe hit by slowdown

Western European sales of mobile phones in the run up to Christmas, traditionally one of the strongest periods for signing up new customers, were sharply down on previous years, confirming industry fears of a marked slowdown in sales.

Figures compiled by the journal Mobile Communications to be released this week, reveal that, across Europe, just 4.6m new customers bought mobile phones in December, down from 11.9m in the same month the previous year and 12.5m in December 1999.

Total subscribers across the region on January 1 stood at 288.8m, up 45.3m over the year but significantly below the record annual growth of 89.8m new subscribers set in 2000. Market penetration across western Europe now stands at 74.3 per cent.

Mobile phone groups Vodafone and Orange signalled last week that average revenues per user, which have been steadily declining over the past four years, could start to rise later this year as a result of greater voice and data traffic.
