Situation: You either cannot access or cannot log in to a secure site while Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall is enabled Solution: This issue has been fixed for NIS/NPF 2002 with the latest LiveUpdate patch. For details on how to apply the LiveUpdate patch and what was fixed, see the Current versions of Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall document. In other versions of NIS/NPF, this problem may be due to a System-Wide rule blocking access to secure sites, or Privacy Control setting: either Confidential information is blocking login information, or access to secure (https) sites is disabled. You can try the following steps, but there may be situations where these do not work. To check the System-Wide rule: 1. Open NIS or NPF. 2. Click Personal Firewall. 3. Click Internet Access Control. 4. Click Configure. 5. Choose System-Wide Settings. 6. Scroll down the list until you find Block access to secure sites. 7. Remove the checkmark by clicking on the box. 8. Click OK. 9. Open your browser and try to connect again. If the issue continues, try the following steps. To ensure you can connect to a secure site: 1. Open NIS or NPF. 2. Click Privacy Control. 3. Click Custom Level. 4. Ensure the option "Enable Secure Connection" is checked. 5. Click OK. 6. Close your browser. 7. Open your browser and try to connect again. If you can connect to a secure site but you cannot log in to it, Confidential information protection may be blocking some or all of your login information. Examine the confidential information you are protecting to see if either your login name or your password is being blocked. To check your confidential information protection: 1. Open NIS or NPF. 2. Click Privacy Control. 3. Click Custom Level. 4. Examine the setting for Confidential Information. If it is set to High, change the setting to Medium. 5. Click OK. 6. Return to the secure site and try to log on again. If you are prompted to allow Confidential information to go out, click OK. 7. If you are able to log in, you know that Confidential information blocking was preventing the login. Leave the Confidential Information setting in Privacy at Prompt.
