I think both Clinton and Ross were suppressing their misgivings in their efforts to pull a rabbit out of hat at Camp David. This strikes me as deeply wrong-headed but not dishonorable.

As for what would have happened if Rabin had lived, we'll never know. Rabin had the clout to make the deal, and the deal itself still had momentum and support on both sides.

But I still think the ship would have wrecked on the same reef, the reef of Yasser Arafat. Arafat has never at any time spoken truth about the nature of a possible deal to the Palestinians, nor did he keep his commitments under Oslo. I think Rabin would have had the clout not to be pressured into 'overlooking' Arafat's arms smuggling or incitement, and the talks would have broken down for other reasons.

But who knows? It's all gone beyond recall.
