Hewlett-Packard sees earnings surpassing estimates
NEW YORK, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Computer and printer maker Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) on Monday said it expects its first-quarter results to substantially exceed the consensus Wall Street forecast of 16 cents per share due to higher revenues and cost-cutting.

Hewlett-Packard, which has proposed a merger with Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), also said it expects revenues to be up moderately from the fourth quarter, based on an uptick in consumer demand in both personal computers and imaging and printing solutions. It previously expected revenues to be down slightly.

``Economic conditions around the world continue to be challenging, but consumer technology spending is clearly showing some strength,'' said Chief Executive Carly Fiorina.

``These results demonstrate that we are focused on our customers and executing well. We remain convinced that we are up to the task of successfully integrating Compaq and creating a powerful new HP,'' said Fiorina.
