I went and reviewed the Thurow speech. He also claims that a recession with a 20% reduction in GDP would cure the trade deficit. That was on the assumption that in a recession people buy fewer things, including exports. (From the other point of view, that consumers impove their balance sheets).

By the look of things not a lot of that is going on (consumer debt / spending is still fairly robust), which makes me really nervous.
