It's unlikely that AMD can turn x86-64 into a marketable bullet, unless they convince the consumer that he or she really needs 64-bit for a "better computing experience." At least MMX and SSE/SSE2 have implications in multimedia, which makes for a more convincing marketing message.

This is an excellent point. None of this wiz-bang stuff turns out to be all it's cracked up to be...but it sells.
