Bruce Steinberg, Merrill Lynch's chief economist, said the U.S. economy appears on the verge of recovery, with growth of about 5 percent expected to be underway by the second half of the year. "The Fed easing cycle is probably at an end. But we don't expect any Fed tightening until late summer or early fall at the soonest," he told clients in a note. After falling 30 percent in 2001, Steinberg expects S&P 500 operating earnings-per-share to rise 13 percent in 2002 and 23 percent in 2003.
