My wife almost lost her pension after 18 years (It would have been substituted with about a $60,000 contribution to a 401K). Vesting was at 20 years (There was some kind of vesting at 5 years but it wasn't for a defined benefit. The company relented after a white colar union began attracting the attention of the staff. None of the new employees get a pension anymore.
