Some two to three years ago, I went on a rampage about accounting scammery. Wrote about it in great detail in "The Tech Review". Not only named several very large, publicly-traded companies, but also supplied the details as to how each of them were pulling off the dirty deeds. Aside from a single newspaper, no one gave a darn. And for my troubles, I received physical and legal threats.

I sent plenty of my material to the authorities and to bubblevision as well. It illicited little more than a yawn or a "conspiracist" comment.

Now, of course bad accounting is coming home to roost and much finger-pointing is evident. Personally, I hope both the authorities and the press are taken to task for their former cavalier attitudes about this stuff. Neither gave a damn as this whole thing picked up critical mass.

By the way, I recall warning a particular analyst about the accounting fraud going on in a company he was "following intently" (and of course bullishly touting). His response to me was that "It is not my job to question audited figures". I was stunned and replied that darned near every fraud that finally comes out in the open has benefitted from audited figures for years. He again replied that it was no concern of his. At that point I lost my cool and described his attitude and forefathers in rather colorful terms. Not that it in any way changed his approach or behaviour.

Best, Earlie
