First, because the potential audience for the remarks is thousands of people (all the posters on SI), not just one or two people you're talking to. Notice I didn't say that making such comments in PM would be wrong. That's the parallel to your example. But this is broadcasting an attack and refusing the other the person the same forum to reply. Not cricket. Second, because most of the posts of that kind are made with the expectation, if not the intent, that the other person will read them and be disburbed by them but be unable to respond directly to them. Flunks the smell test big time.
