I don't think the legal distinction is particularly applicable. We all place ourselves on public view by posting, even if does not rise to the level of being "public figures". If someone publishes, someone else may comment. The first person need not be a "public figure", and the other person need not be merely speaking to a handful of people. The comments need not be in the same venue, and it is at the discretion of the publications if they carry letters columns, or which letters are published. Only straightforward retractions are obligatory.......
