Very interesting. I had never heard that the DOL was the guardian of the rules. I have come across a couple of references to a "True Self-Directed IRA Custodian" but not looked into it in great detail. One thing I did notice is that some such entities will permit you to put no more than 70% of the IRA funds under their custody into an options or futures account. There were also some disclaimers about how you, not them, are still responsible for "obeying the IRA rules". That only reinforces the need to thoroughly investigate this with a competent expert before jumping in.
