Tokyo, Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp.'s shares fell below 400 yen for the first time since 1986 after the second- largest chipmaker's credit rating was cut one notch by Moody's Investors Service yesterday.

The shares fell as much as 4.2 percent to 385 yen, and finished the morning session at 391 yen. About 9.6 million shares were traded, making them the fifth-most active by volume on Japanese exchanges. NEC Corp.'s shares recovered to 894 yen, up 1.1 percent after sliding as much as 3.3 percent to 855 yen. They were the most active by volume with 28 billion shares traded.

The shares of Toshiba and NEC plunged after the companies reported record losses in the three months to Dec. 31 at the end of last month because of slumping chip and computer sales. Worldwide, chip sales fell by a third last year to $139 billion, their worst-ever annual decline, the Semiconductor Industry Association said yesterday.
