Taiwan CPI falls again, deflation risk dismissed

TAIPEI, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Taiwan's consumer price index (CPI) fell 1.67 percent in January from a year earlier, the third straight monthly decline, but the state statistics agency said on Tuesday the island was under no deflation risk.

The cabinet's Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics attributed the latest drop to a high comparative base as the Lunar New Year fell in January last year.

Consumer spending usually rises as local companies hand out annual bonuses and Chinese communities gear up to celebrate the important holiday, which falls in February this year.

"Domestic spending and money supply still posted growth. We see no signs of deflation," said Ku Pin-jan, deputy director of the statistics bureau.

Ku said consumer prices would resume rising when the island's economy starts to recover in the second quarter.

The drop in consumer prices came after CPI shrank 0.01 percent in 2001, the first full-year consumer price contraction since a 0.15 percent drop in 1985.
