Hang Seng stumbles after Wall Street fall

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong stocks were lower at midday on Tuesday following a sharp fall on Wall Street on concerns over the transparency of corporate financial statements and the accuracy of company audits.

But analysts said that the losses in Hong Kong blue chips may have been unjustified given that there was no sign of the dubious accounting practices that brought down energy giant Enron.

Bucking the market were shares of China's top personal computer maker Legend Holdings following the release of better than expected third quarter earnings.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index was down 1.34 percent at 10,577.14 by the midday break, after touching 10,541.28, its lowest level since mid-November. Turnover was thin at HK$3.38 billion (US$433 million), compared to HK$3.17 billion by midday on Monday.
