Sharon has promised not to physically harm Arafat and will tell the Americans Israel has no intention of toppling the PA. He wants the U.S. to encourage what he calls "the pragmatists." Sharon yesterday briefed world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, about his meeting with three top Palestinian leaders last week. # Iraq: Israel is leaving Iraq to the Americans, usually avoiding any public reference to the Baghdad regime and its threats against Israel. But Sharon will tell the Americans that if Iraq, under attack from the U.S., strikes at Israel, Jerusalem will not "sit quietly." # Syria. Israel wants more pressure on Syria, including the eviction from Damascus of the rejectionist groups, the eviction of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards from Lebanon, shutting down the terrorist training camps in Bekaa, an end to Syrian support for Hezbollah, implementation of UN Security Resolution 425, which calls for the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon and a Lebanese army deployment on the border with Israel, and information about Israeli MIAs. On Israel's relations with the U.S., Sharon won't be bringing a "shopping list" to Washington, and has still not made up his mind whether he will bring up various bilateral issues or leave them for a lower echelon. These include an outstanding $800 million that the Clinton administration promised Israel in connection with the withdrawal from Lebanon. Sharon did raise the issue during his last meeting with Bush, asking for it as either a grant or a loan. But he may leave it to Finance Minister Silvan Shalom to deal with the issue, when Shalom goes to Washington on February 20. [snip] _______________________
