If the administration could 'care less what was in the meetings' than they are purer than Cesar's wife... which is unlikely when dealing with any group of politicians.

It is more likely that they fear the political damage likely to ensue if they are tarred with the brush as being lakeys of the Big Oil / Coal / Uranium industries....

But if they are merely standing up for executive privilege then - agree or disagree with that stand - at least they are hewing to a line for reasons of principle, not for partisan advantage.

Of course (correct me if I am wrong though) I believe they have actually not yet asserted any formal claim of 'executive privilege'... and in that regard the quoted article was incorrect. I believe the admin. has been exceedingly careful to not make that claim, which has specific requirements to be satisfied.

I thought the article was interesting in one respect: making the point that Cheney's case raises special complications. "He is neither the President nor a cabinet or subcabinet official wholly within the executive branch. Constitutionally, he is also an officer of the legislature..." and that raises particular issues that may negate the ability to legally assert executive privilege in this case.
