Janie, A couple of years ago some anthropologist published an account of his experiences trying to assimilate himself into and to learn about an uncivilized tribe. He did this with the best will, and full of humanitarian curiosity. But the people didn't like him much, and their way of showing this was to defecate right in front of his front door. Does this remind you of anyone? (The anthropologist began to hate everyone in the tribe and came home and wrote up his experiences, describing them as incurably nasty and vicious. Lost his scientific cool.)
