A year ago, when European GSM operators launched their upgrades to general packet radio service, or GPRS, their debut was marred by too much hype and a weak early product line-up. The first phones were almost indistinguishable from regular mobile handsets: same size, same displays, same software. Most consumers couldn't tell the difference between GPRS models and ordinary GSM phones. (GSM stands for global systems for mobile communications, a pretty basic standard.)

Only this spring, about 18 months after the notorious Motorola Timeport GPRS model became commercially available, are the "real" GRPS models arriving to shops.

These GPRS phones have entirely new features specifically designed to use the new data-access technology. Color displays, built-in cameras, new messaging software and Java support will finally give consumers a reason to think that 2.5G is really a completely separate product category from old second-generation phones. .. <<
