From the 'Zen of Shorting'
Chu Mei Ash the great short of ancient Japan was often confronted while he was lecturing his students. Such was the case this day.
"Master Ash! I would speak with you!"
"I don't believe I know you small toad." Replied Chu Mei.
"I am Oh So Baka, I am here to speak of your short of the Fast Horse Mail Company."
"Ah yes, the company that was to send letters using horse relays all over Japan, a most profitable short indeed."
"Yes that is the one," Baka said, "Your short cost me huge losses."
"My short did? I thought that Fast Horse was going to be attempting to travel dangerous lands with single riders. And further would have to send small boats between islands with mail. I felt that they would be enriching bandits with fine horses and pirates with whatever they were carrying in their mail pouches. Such was indeed the case."
"That is not so! When you called for a short on Fast Horse the stock price moved down and finally the stock crashed. The company was unable to raise enough capital by selling stock because of shorting."
"I see," Chu Mei replied, " I see you have read the companies claims. The catastrophic losses they were taking because of pirates and bandits had no bearing. Nor did the fact that very very few wished to use their service because they didn't wish their letters or money sent in the mail to be stolen?"
"No it was your ignorant shorting of this fine company."
At this time the great short rose and bowed deeply to Oh So Baka. "Master Baka," He said, "I am very honored to have you here. You have achieved a level of Zen that I have so long aspired to."
"What do you mean?" Baka asked.
"I have long sought the 'Zen of No Mind'. To be able to shut out the thoughts of this world of illusion. I have meditated many hours and only brushed in passing the skill. Where you are able now to walk, speak, and truly your entire existence shows you have achieved no mind. I stand in awe. Tell me were your losses large in your investment in Fast Horse?"
"I am not feeling a very strong Zen like state right now Master Ash. My losses in Fast Horse were huge. That should not concern you, I have plans to use my remaining fortune to recoup my losses, and certainly not by shorting."
Chu Mei bowed again to Oh So Baka. "Yours is a soul blessed by the Gods most assuredly. For you walk the path of the Buddha. You are far advanced on the Wheel of Life. I am tormented that I am bound so strongly to this world of illusion. I spend my time chasing worldly gain. I have yet to break free of the grip of gold.
You, Master Baka, are doing so. Your state of 'No Mind' is already enabling you to divest yourself of all of your worldly possessions even as the Buddha himself did."
"I believe the Buddha shed his worldly possessions voluntarily."
"Just so," replied Chu Mei, "But it is not for us to say what is the better path, just to seek the path. You have indeed found it. For like the Buddha you will soon have nothing but enlightenment and be in the wilderness starving.
As I have said it is a great honor to have you grace us by being here. I must go now though. I fear I am finding myself being caught up in most unseemly envy."
It is then that the great short bowed and then walked away. But oddly enough Baka did not return the bow. One of Chu Mei Ash's students recorded that he merely stood blinking very fast.
