It's political kabuki alright.

Funny thing, in light of all the media attention to this Cheney meetings stuff, little attention has been paid to a similar Executive vs. Congressional battle.

The administration just lost a court decision (though they say they will fight it all the way to the Supreme Court) in a contest with another Congressional committee. The committee wanted the admin. to release the statistically adjusted numbers from the national Census (instead of just the raw count) to the public. The adjusted figures claimed that many poor / migrant / etc. peoples were not counted at all... while many upper class people were counted twice.

The committee argued that - since the census is supposed to be public info paid for with public dollars - that all the work of the census takers should be out in public for people to consider. The admin. obviously disagrees.

Note: this has nothing to do with what numbers are officially used. The raw count numbers (not the adjusted numbers) are what policy is officially based on.
