I just thought I'd give this one a pass for a change, and go with the flow ;)

But I voiced the very same argument as you presented about seven years ago to TD's CTO (a Washington Technology consultant to the venture, who turned into resident staff over time) on an extended debate thread on the Compuserve Telecom Forum. Now you're bringing back memories.

One of the refrains of the era from the TD camp was that most of the world's people had still never even seen a phone, much less electricity or plumbing. And that fiber would never find its way to the inner reaches of the jungle. You could imagine the types of discussions that ensued.
