Vodafone, IBM and Motorola are to collaborate in the development of technologies that will enable 3G and GPRS mobile devices to be managed over wireless networks.

The research will investigate 'device management' technology that will remove the need for mobile customers to physically upgrade software and services on their devices.

A spokesman for Vodafone said: "These are complex devices; we can't expect customers to upgrade them themselves. We are also removing the need for customers to take their phones into shops to have the software upgraded."

The proposed technology will have the ability to configure mobile devices, monitor and troubleshoot service performance as well as install and upgrade software.

The companies plan to create the technology to current standards and hope that the techniques they develop will become industry standards themselves.

A spokesman for IBM said: "One of the drawbacks today, to the mass rollout of data services, has been the lack of common standards for device management. It's crucial to the future success of the mobile industry that high-level standards are developed now." <<
