That is an interesting consideration. Of course, at a dinner party, there is a structure, and dinner should not much exceed two hours. Plus, most people understand that they should be entertaining, when they hold the floor, and should allow others the opportunity to take the floor. Thus, there is a sensitivity to not taking up a soapbox or getting into private wrangles when in company, but to allow for more flow, of topic and interlocutors, in the time at table.

Here, the social expectations are not so clear, and what constitutes a faux pas is a subject of debate. People are less sensitive, absent faces and rolled eyes and pursed lips and heavy sighs, to being bores or worse......
