Unluckily CNN means little with their bubbly-bubbly-twittly-twiddly-doo-doo soundbite reporting, compared to local, european 0.5-1 hour long, serious debates and documentaries, uninterrupted by commercials. (additionally they seem so arcane conservative) Unluckily the four really commersial ones are mostly seen as jokes, one aspect enforced as they invest in ridiculous cabel channels who only run the worst and cheapest soap operas, 60 minutes losing to "the survivor". UK still has a problem with Murdoch, but luckily the french are producing better satellite pornography, lesser sillycones, it is even funny at times and the actors actually seem to have fun. The matter of the newspapers is slightly more complicated, but CSPAN has touched on that, briefly, a couple of times. One issue is the debate between magazines, in the magazines. Another that due to multi-party systems and consensus governments, editorials can be exactly what they should be, creative and suggesting solutions, not just trying to be prepared for the regular swings between the two parties. Ilmarinen Ok,OK, I know these are things rarely debated in USA, but they are sometimes mentioned at CSPAN.

Hmmm, here we go again. This doesn't answer the question why European coverage is so different from American; It didn't because I wasn't trying. On European opinions, I have to take someone else's assertions. That leaves me a bit uncomfortable, so I passed. On the US, I think I've made my point about as clear as I know how. When the administration in power attempts to take a balanced view in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and that administration has reasonable credibility, the US media which sucks up to whichever admin is in power, leans, sometimes aggressively, in that direction. For whatever the reason. Fox is Fox so it doesn't, unless it's folk are in power. CBS seems to me to be a bit of an outlyer though not very far. CNN can't wait to get to the front of the parade; and MSNBC is not terribly far behind, with a notable exception or two. Yes, you've given your opinion on CNN and it still mystifies me. No doubt each of us notice and remember the things that disturb us most and miss the things that don't. I'm not talking about major incidents; I'm talking about the everyday presentation; about who gets interrupted; about whose position gets favorable positioning in the framing of discussions; etc. It would take a study on either of our parts to advance this discussion. If you are like me, you are much too busy to do that sort of an undergraduate assignment--watch twenty four hours of CNN and note the number of times x occurs or doesn't occur. Said has done it in all his essays (that I've read), and so has Hanan Ashrawi. The problem with this assertion is that you have already made a decision that they are either just following ritual formulas or too cowed to speak their own views. So whatever they say has no merit. Not good. Particularly, when, in Said's case, there were clear links with opposition from the Israeli army reservists. I don't wish to suggest that was of any serious significance but it did suggest a reaching. As far as Sharon goes, I'm completely convinced that he, like the Bushies, will overreach and we will all pay a very steep price. Then we'll see what happens. I think it looks very, very bad. John
