RR: When I was younger I used to ski in Colorado more...

Growing up in Michigan (where you thought 500 feet of vertical was a big deal) helped me really appreciate the mountains out west. When I was very young we started taking some family trips out to Colorado (to Aspen, Snowmass, Steamboat, etc...). The scouts used to rent condos in Winter Park and we had a lot of fun there too.

My worst fall ever was at Vail....I was skiing with my sister and some family friends that worked there. Curt was on the ski patrol and he was an amazing skier...The problem was when you skied with him you didn't have to wait in the lines (and I was actually looking forward to catching my breath every now and then)...then you have all those high speed chairs -- there was very little time to rest...My sister was going to school at Colorado College at the time and was used to the mountains...it was my first day of the season and I was tired because of some big projects for work...At lunch I told everyone that I needed to go down the mountain early...My friend on the ski patrol went back to work and my sister and I accidently dropped over the back side of the mountain into the bowls...I had these very stiff Rossignol giant slalom skiis at the time and had quite a work out...Over an hour later we were starting our final run of the day...We took an intermediate slope since I was very tired...on the way down I caught an edge and had a freak accident...I blew out my right shoulder and actually had to go down the mountain on a tobagan...The ski patrol provided great service BUT I was in SO MUCH PAIN...The orthopod in the emergency room had x-rays taken and popped things back in place, imobilized my shoulder and put me on high doses of pain relievers...He warned me about skiing with my family later in the week at Steamboat -- so I had to become a lodge stud for that vacation...That shoulder never completely healed (even with some world class physical therapy)....Eventually I had it re-built by a great orthopedic surgeon in West Des Moines, Iowa...All he did was shoulders and I had spent too many years in physical therapy trying to strengthen a shoulder that would pop out on me in the gym or on the tennis courts. The doctor ended up doing some major arthroscopic surgery (put pins in and re-attached some of the ligaments)...After a quick re-covery period I was back doing everything again...It's been almost 5 years now and I have not ever had the shoulder pop out again. I'm a little older and wiser though...when I ski and start to get tired I LISTEN TO MY BODY.

Regards,

Scott

btw, our family started skiing in Utah quite often in my teen-age years...I would say Park City is my favorite resort. Whistler/ Blackomb is #2 for me -- I used to escape up there when I was working in Seattle...love the glacier and the village that makes you feel like you're up in the alps. Squaw Valley at Lake Tahoe is my 3rd for me...I have skied there with my cousins from San Francisco and we always have a lot of fun. I have never skied at Breckenridge or Keystone and am really looking forward to this trip over the weekend...=)
