I think the cause is ENRON + the Fed pumping money. ENRON makes people think "how do I know what I know?" The answer is now "I dont know, I only think I know what the "experts" have told me." Post ENRON, the value of "expert opnion" is zero. Do any of the investors in companies understand the companies they invest in? Nope. How many holders of DELL computer could build a computer? How many owners of Exxon know how to find, ship, refine, and market petorchemials or gasoline? Investors have lost their North Star and are lost. They now know they dont have a clue about the stocks they own. Investors are now frozen. But Greenspan isnt. Greenspan is pumping away but since investors cant invest and there are more dollars to spend, gold, the anti-investment, is winning by default.
