<the Mideast contains some irrational players.> Sharon??

Strange, he seems to be exactly as he always has been, and now it
is mainly an issue of waiting him out, until next elections.

victory in war these days is less a function of population or landmass than will, skill, and technological sophistication. In all three of those areas Israel beats its neighbors hands down. You're right that some substate actors with nasty weapons might not be deterrable and could pose a large threat--but once again, the kinds of aid the US gives Israel are either too much or too little to handle such a contingency. The only hope there lies in the eventual moderation and development of its enemies and the finding of some sort of mutually acceptable solution to the Palestinian issue. I'm not sure that Sharon's actions are particularly helpful in those areas...
