Zoltan,

Re: There is no meaningful defense of AMT

Ridiculous. There is a perfectly good reason that AMT came in to the tax code. It closes abusive tax loopholes for fraudulent companies like Enron.

Re: You don't understand what the AMT is.

Perhaps you could educate me. Although I forewarn you, any chicanery, sophistry or nuanced prevarication will be dealt with in a harsh and abrasive manner.

Re: The AMT is terrible. It hurts the economy.

WRONG! It hurts the feelings of very greedy individuals who see getting away with as much as they can to be the meaning of life itself.

Re: AMT makes companies pay more taxes when things are bad and less when times are good.

This sort of Pavlovian carrot-and-stick motivation is a wonderful thing. It prevents companies from cheating by claiming that they haven't made any money, as Enron did in four of the past five years, paying no income tax at all in declarations to the IRS, while they lied to their shareholders and booked $1 Billion in illusory profits. AMT prevents cheaters from taking quite as much advantage of the system.
