Gateway sees more losses, more cash

LA QUINTA, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Gateway is expanding its store offerings and being more aggressive with PC prices but sees more losses ahead, its CEO said Wednesday.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs technology conference here, Ted Waitt said the company didn't increase sales in 2001 over the previous year because "we were not offering the best value across the product line."

Waitt said Gateway is more aggressively pricing its products so far this year, from low-end machines at $599 with a monitor to a $2,999 high-end computer that comes with an 18-inch flat-screen display.

He said the company plans to put a broader range of products in its 276 stores to drive sales and will detail those plans, along with specific financial plans targets and a 2002 product roadmap, at its analyst meeting on Feb. 27.

Part of the plan for retail stores will include adding more digital cameras, imaging and video equipment, he said.

He said Gateway (GTW: news, chart, profile) plans to increase marketing and communications spending, resulting in higher expenses in the first quarter. The company will report an operating loss for the next few quarters but will finish the year with more than $1 billion in cash, he said.

Gateway shares rose 8.8 percent to close at $5.18 Wednesday.
