'Clever Marketing'?

Before announcing its quarterly earnings, Cisco issued a statement regarding "an internal
communication from a Cisco executive characterizing Cisco's Q2 financial results in
positive terms [that] was inadvertently distributed to a large number of Cisco employees
after close of market on February 5."

The premature report, which Slaby said he suspects might be "clever marketing," was
followed by an official statement from Cisco chief financial officer Larry Carter, which
then was followed by the company's official second-quarter earnings report.

"So as to minimize any potential confusion, the results we announce this afternoon will
exceed the current consensus estimates of earnings per share and revenues for the second
quarter of our fiscal year," Carter said.
