If I remember correctly - fear was that Motorola could not produce the 68k in sufficient volume.

IBM was a 15% investor in Intel - an investment made at the time they selected their CPU. They cashed out about half a dozen years later at a good profit (but would have done much better if they didn't sell out at all)
