I looked at the underlying max pain data and would say that it is more accurate to put max pain in a range of from 40 to 42.50 as the number of contracts taken out is about the same either way.

how have u been using the max pain for your AMAT investing/trading? using it for covered call writing? entry pts for short term long positions? and how useful were they for u?
