That's certainly one of AMD's greatest strengths. I was very surprised the first year they pulled ahead. For AMD to exceed companies many times their size in patents is a big achievement. Even having that IP to trade with other companies gives them a lot of leverage.

wbmw, in my experience, some companies go for patents a lot more than others, maybe even for bragging rights. You can patent almost anything, including trivial stuff that nobody else would be interested in. I hold numbers of patents that companies hold with a very large grain of salt.
