Petrol, I think back in history when the Mongols decided to conquer what are now Iran and Iraq. The Caliph of Baghdad sent Hulagu Khan a message saying "all I have to do is say the word and millions of Muslims throughout the world will sweep you from the pages of history." And he sang that tune up until Hulagu Khan took Baghdad and hanged him. I suspect The Ayatollah is more message than substance also.

BTW, the curse of the Caliph did have some impact in the very long run. Hulagu Khan's cousins in The Golden Horde converted to Islam and every time Hulagu worked up an army to invade Syria and Egypt, the Mongols from Moscow attacked his northern borders and he had to back off. And eventually, even Hulagu's grandson converted to Islam. But my point is, the Caliph was still dead. <G>
