Brian,

I'm not trying to analyze the present system from a moral point of view. I'll leave that to others. I'm analyzing it on whether it is producing economic growth. And it is!

It is that growth that is the best hope for the conditions that your posts depict. Without growth, we are no better than the birds you mention fighting over an inadequate food supply.

The developing world is growing faster than the advanced economies and I think it will continue. In ten years, at present growth rates, China's economy will be bigger that that of the United States. It's easy for them to grow because they can just buy the technologies that have already been developed. For the U.S. to continue to grow requires new technologies.

It is precisely the demand for technology that will make companies in this field good investments, IMO and makes those who think the U.S. economy is all that matters very shortsighted.

OT

Today the top wealthiest 20% of people in the world control 86% of the wealth while the bottom 20% control 1% of the wealth. If you saw group of birds doing the same in your backyard with food leaving some to starve unnecessarily, would you allow it to continue or shoo the wealthiest away and try to get them to apply a more even distribution of the wealth?

The rich countries have most of the wealth because they create most of the wealth. The less rich countries are overall growing faster and many of them will eventually become rich countries. This is not to say that the policies of the rich countries never do anything to hurt the poor countries, it would certainly help if the rich countries would accept more food and textile imports, but the rich countries are not richer because they are stealing from the poor countries.

Tim

You seem to be implying that it is wrong to create wealth and that it is somehow noble to fail to create wealth. If this is the premise you are operating from I think you are dead wrong.

This country, which holds so much wealth, has also created the means to feed the whole world in the process.
