Wonder if he is smart enuf to have arranged the kidnapping?? I don't think it is in Musharraf's interest to draw too much attention to the terrorists in Pakistan, so I doubt it was staged by him. In fact Abdul Sattar's irksome comments about Pearl "walking into their lair", indicate that the Pakistani government is very vexed over the whole affair. However, the involvement of elements of the ISI is quite likely. There are two possibilities. Either Omar Sheikh and gang did it on their own and they targeted Pearl as just another American who can be used as a bargaining chip, or some elements in the ISI arranged it with the help of Sheikh because Pearl's investigations were getting too close to exposing Al Qaeda/ISI connections and possibly direct involvement of the ISI in some terrorist attack on the US(Pearl was investigating Pakistani connections of Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, at the time of the abduction). The first scenario is more hopeful for Pearl and his family, but the kind of demands that were raised by the kidnappers tends to make that the less likely scenario.
