If we keep discussing light bulbs, we may make the "Hot Subjects" list. At least the topic is more relevant than searching for dinosaur bones with Elvis.

Interesting cost perspective on the three types of light bulbs JRH.

Here's an article on the future of lighting:

I did the incandescent/flourescent calculations a few years back. Bottom line was that if you use the light a lot (several hours a day or more) you could make money buying a flourescent, even one that put out considerably more light. If you didn't use the light much then it probably wouldn't pay for itself before something went wrong with the unit. Flourescents also have one major drawback in that they don't work well below about 55 degrees. They are a poor choice for outdor locations in the north. If you want to use a flourescent in those circumstances, use a T8 or T12 setup with a solid state ballast. Solid state ballasts are more costly but are totally quiet and extremely energy efficient. They also turn on the light immediately, a key giveaway they are there. I much prefer solid state over the more common magnetic ballasts.

Have been seeing the LED units as brake lights for tractor trailers. Nice light output! California also replaced most of their traffic lights with LED's last year. Again I noticed the bright crisp light output. If they come out with an inexpensive white unit I agree the company that produces/markets it will clean up. That's when I will sell everything and short the power producers.
