I'm trying to do some other work but can't help looking at the futures and things:

NSDQ100 MAR02 1422.00 +700
E-NASDAQ MAR02 1423.00 +800

Also if you count wrong you find out right away. It doesn't take weeks or months to find out if you were wrong or not.

That is what I like about trading you get fast and fairly unequivocal feedback on your ideas. In my academic research it can take a long time to find out if you are right or not and often it ends up being pretty vague. And a lot depends on one or two referees who can then trash your paper after you wait months for them to read it. It can get very frustrating.

I very much like George Soros' approach. Have you read the "Alchemy of Finance". He tried to be an academic and failed pretty fast so he became an investor/trader. I was a lot more successful as an academic and so far way less successful as an investor/trader :)
