I guess one motivation for CDs is that the rates are slightly higher than treasuries, but I never use 'em.

Once in the mid eighties I responded to one of those teaser ads and went in to an S&L with the intention of buying a CD, but I got cold feed and walked out. A week later the feds closed it! The FDIC only insures the principal, not the interest, so my money would have been tied up for weeks or months with no income.
