Stockholm, Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Telia AB, Sweden's biggest phone company, posted a fourth-quarter loss as it wrote down the value of its 40,000-kilometer fiber-optic network that stretches through Europe and the U.S.

The company lost 572 million kronor ($54 million), or 0.19 krona a share, compared with net income of 7.41 billion, or 2.47 a share, in the year-earlier quarter. It wrote down the value of the fiber-optic unit by 3.03 billion kronor. Telia had one-time gains in the year-earlier period from sales of assets such as Eniro AB.

Telia is struggling to bolster sales and profit growth as demand for mobile telephony slows and losses mount at its carrier unit, which operates the fiber-optic network. Investors have said they want Chief Executive Officer Marianne Nivert to shed the carrier business, which lost 381 million kronor in the quarter.
