KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (AFP) -
South Korea's largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. foresees global sales rising 10 percent this year from 1.6 million cars in 2001, a top official said Thursday.

Sales in Asia alone were expected to surge 46 percent to 35,000 units, up from 24,000 last year, as the region recovers from economic woes due to the September 11 terror attacks in the United States, said Hyundai director Um Kwang Heum.

"Fortunately our company has not been much affected by the September 11 incident," Um told a news conference after launching the first Hyundai Sonata model fully assembled in Malaysia.

"In 2001, we sold 1.6 million cars worldwide. Domestically we sold 710,000 and export is almost 900,000. We expect about 10 percent increase for 2002."

Hyundai's improved brand value, increased research and development as well as its reasonable pricing would drive sales and boost its "aim to be among the world's top five by 2010 or even earlier," he added.
