<<Why is Newmont Mining (NEM) underperforming most other gold stocks? >>

They are in the middle of buying two other mining firms. The paying firm often doesn't do as well for some period of time - no matter the industry. Then there is also the whole hedged Vs. unhedged debate. To further muddy the takeover price, Nem is of of the near unhedged mining firms, with (one of?)their takeovers being hedged & there will be costs involved with unrolling the positions.
