Fed buying Treasury coupons dated 3/31/02-8/31/02

NEW YORK, Feb 8 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve said on Friday it was buying
U.S. Treasury securities dated March 31, 2002 through August 31, 2002 on the open
market, adding permanent reserves to the banking system.

The Fed said it excluded all Treasury Inflation Indexed Securities from the purchase.
Bids were due from dealers by 10:45 a.m. EST (1545 GMT), for delivery on Monday.

In morning dealings, federal funds were trading at 1.688 percent, below the Fed's 1.75
percent target for the rate.
