you actually raise an important point: SYMMETRY. if one looks at a 20 year monthly chart of the SnP, one can gain some perspective: so far, the decline has indeed been a mirror image of the preceding advance. this symmetry is an often observed phenomenon when a market's long term primary trend changes. the big problem for the bulls is that if the symmetry continues, the entire parabolic advance from the '94 low is likely to be eventually erased.
the alternative to this is obviously that easy Al and his pals manage to re-ignite the bubble by means of printing a lot of money (hasn't worked thus far, and as an aside, they tried that in '29 to '32 too, with zero results. couldn't overcome the effects of liquidity preference).
however, reviving the bubble would be predicated on actually increasing the economic imbalances that have led to the downturn even further. that in turn would ensure that once the move exhausts itself, an even bigger bust would commence.
however, more likely their attempts to do battle with the new primary trend will ultimately end in failure. they may be able to push the corrective process further out in time, similar to the early 70's, but in the end the correction of the imbalances MUST occur.
