Actually, my use of the term 'I'll bet' (which you were kind enough to enumerate) doesn't mean that I'm 'unsure about these conditions' as you say, it's more just an outgrowth of a 'southern' rhetorical style... colloquialism if you will, in the service of making a point.

With Dubbya in the White House, that style somehow just seems appropriate :)

As far as any 'facts' of Ken Lay's political influence I may have alleged... I believe the only ones I can hang my hat on are that 'Kenny Boy' got his hand-picked man appointed to head the energy regulatory agencies (both in Texas, and in Washington, nixing Bush's first choices) which agencies are responsible for regulating Enron and the industry it is in. That, and of course his private meetings with Cheney while the 'National Energy Policy' recommendations were being formulated.

Not a bad bit of quid pro quo IMHO, and well worth the modest expense.

As far as 'form<ing> ...opinions and ideas on nothing more than suspicions', well, in politics appearances are everything. Bush might be better off learning the 'Watergate and Monica-gate' lessons... politically, coming clean early is always better than stonewalling. It's generally the cover-up that does the real damage....
