Tech regroups after surprising loss
Quarterback Patrick Dosh bolts for Florida, but Jimmy Williams picks Virginia Tech over South Carolina.

Wednesday's national signing day closed much better than it began for the Virginia Tech football program.
Hours after being stung by quarterback Patrick Dosh's last-minute change of heart to sign with Florida, Tech rebounded by beating another two Southeastern Conference schools for the services of heralded junior-college defensive tackle Jimmy Williams.

Williams, an agile 6-foot-4, 305-pounder who attends Pasadena (Calif.) City College, picked the Hokies over Alabama and South Carolina. A native of Memphis, Tenn., Williams is expected to provide immediate help for the Hokies, who were ravaged by graduation losses in the defensive trenches.

The signing of Williams helped ease some of the Hokies' pain of losing Dosh, a 6-3, 210-pounder from Richmond. Dosh had publicly reconfirmed his commitment to sign with Tech on Monday after visiting the Florida campus last weekend.

"Jim Cavanaugh [Tech assistant] talked to Dosh on Monday night and everything seemed fine," Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "So it came as a surprise when we got the news this morning."

Tuesday's oral commitment to Tech by Parade All-American QB Marcus Vick of Newport News likely helped sway Dosh's mind. Beating out Michael Vick's little brother for the QB job in Blacksburg might not be an easy task for anyone. Young Vick will get his shot immediately, Beamer said.

"We're going to give 'em all a shot," Beamer said of his five QBs in the fold. "The guy who gives us the best opportunity to win is going to be the first one we roll out there.

"As far as Marcus goes, I do think he's further along than Michael was when he came out of high school as far as being able to play quickly."

Tech's 20 signees included two players - Vick (No.2) and Richmond defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis (No.4) - who were rated in the top 10 of the The Roanoke Times recruiting rankings. Meanwhile, Virginia nabbed five of the newspaper's top 10, including a prime Tech target, Woodbridge linebacker Ahmad Brooks, the list's No.1 recruit.

"The Cavaliers didn't thoroughly dominate in state," said Allen Wallace, publisher of SuperPrep magazine. "Virginia Tech was hurt most because they lost some linebackers - Justin London and [Ahmad] Brooks. As expected, they got Marcus Vick, and a great player like that basically gets them in the top 25."

Wallace said he "probably" would rate Tech's class 25th nationally.

"You've got guys who never have seen these kids play somehow ranking them," Beamer said. "How are they supposed to know who goes where? You tell me.

"I'll say this: We're pleased with the ones we got. We got 16 out of 20 from the state and I don't know how they rank up there and all that stuff, but I know this: We'll take ours and go play theirs and feel good about it."

Hi Gregor, as wildstar has said, this recruiting class is coming of to be the 2nd best, after last year it's hard to repeat.
